During the months when most students are getting used to new schools, new teachers, new classes, etc., several Houston area Gateway Preparatory School students participated in a different class. These students, who have proven their ability to work at a consistent level of academic excellence and focus, began their year in a pilot program administered by Dr. Kuni Beasley, founder of Gateway Preparatory, and Mrs. Debbie Elder, Executive Director. The purpose of the program was to apply the Accelerated Learning Skills that these students have been trained in by Howard Berg, the World Fastest Reader and co-Founder of the program. By applying these skills to their studies these students are able to earn dual credit for college courses while still in Middle or High School. These students, who ranged in age from 13 – 16, spent two-and-a-half months working through the College coursework for Introductory Sociology. At the end of this time, they were admitted into the CLEP exam to test for credit. 14 of the 16 students achieved a passing score based on the College Board standards. These scores will remain valid for twenty years, and the students will be able to transfer these scores into most colleges for credit when they enter that phase of their academics. This overwhelming success has inspired the students to continue in this program and they have already begun their work on their next college-level course. One of the unusual elements of this pilot program is that the students did not meet to review their work together, but each student was part of a regular on-line meeting where notes were worked on collectively. This unique aspect of Gateway Preparatory is opening many doors for these students whose future is truly in their hands.
